Botox or dermal filler: Which one do I need?

When it comes to looking younger, so many people mistakenly think they have to go under the knife. Cosmetic injectables such as Botox® and dermal fillers make it easy to look years younger in just one treatment session. Which injectable is right for your needs? Read on to learn more.

Dynamic wrinkles

Cosmetic injectables address the two different types of wrinkles: Static and dynamic wrinkles. Dynamic wrinkles form when you use your facial muscles to form facial expressions. Smiling, frowning, laughing, squinting – these expressions over time can lead to dynamic wrinkles.

Botox® is a prescription medicine that is injected into muscles to temporarily improve the look of moderate to severe forehead lines, crow’s feet and frown lines between the eyebrows, and soften the look of thick bands in the neck. A single treatment session takes less than an hour, and Botox® will be in full effect a few days after treatment. Results last for about four months, at which time you will need to return for another treatment session to maintain results.

Static wrinkles

Static wrinkles are the folds and lines that are visible on the skin at all times. Aging is one of the main causes of static wrinkles as the skin becomes less elastic, and underlying proteins in the skin decrease over time. These wrinkles are exacerbated by sun damage, smoking, nutrition, genetics or from prolonged dynamic wrinkles. Examples include marionette lines on the sides of the mouth, smile lines and wrinkles on the upper lip, static wrinkles under the eyes and nasolabial folds.

Dermal fillers are designed specifically to treat static wrinkles, as Botox® isn’t effective on those. Popular dermal fillers such as Juvederm® address volume loss and fills wrinkles and creases on your face instantly for one to two years, depending on the specific filler.

Botox® and Juvederm® can be used alone or together to tackle all of your wrinkle concerns and help you achieve a more youthful appearance. Call (718) 608-1111 for a consultation in one of our offices in New Brunswick, NJ, Staten Island, NY, and Brooklyn, NY.
