If you work all day at a computer, but you suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome, it can make you feel like everything you type is a bit painful. As a condition that causes swelling and tenderness in the carpal tunnel joint in the hand, it can be hard to find relief after a long day of work. So, what can you do when you have aching hands? Let’s take a closer look.
Ice and Heat
One of the best things that you can do for sore, swollen joints is to alternate between icing and heating. One easy way to do this with your hands is if you have double sinks in your bathroom. If you do have double sinks, you can fill one of them up with ice after and then another one up with hot water. Then, you can place your hands in one sink for two minutes and alternate from sink to sink. If you don’t have double sins, you can alternate between a hot pack and an ice pack.
Another easy way for you to get rid of pain and inflammation is by taking ibuprofen for about a week or so. Although ibuprofen isn’t a long term solution, it should help you get rid of any discomfort so that you can start to work again.
Keep Your Hands In a Neutral Position
When your wrists are bent, it places some pressure and tension on your carpal tunnel joint. Try to keep your hands in as much of a neutral position as possible; especially when you are typing. Although this will take a conscious effort on your end, once you get into the habit, it will be second nature. If you are having a hard time finding a neutral position to put your hands in, consider getting a new desk or chair so that your arms are correctly positioned while you’re typing.
