Recovery 101: How to Avoid Frankenstein-Like Scars

Plastic Surgery Perth Amboy, NJ Here at our office, Dr. George Philip Smith specializes in a variety of cosmetic surgeries including breast surgeries, eyelid surgery, and even abdominoplasties. And although we will do our best to ensure that you go home equipped with all of the information you need to heal and recover properly, it is ultimately up to you to follow all of our instructions. To avoid getting post-operative scars that would even have Frankenstein feeling bashful, we have created a list of tips for you. Let’s take a closer look.

Keep It Hydrated

Did you know that one of the best ways that you can help a wound from turning into a large scar during the healing process is to keep it really hydrated and lubricated? The moister the skin is, the less likely you are to be left with a vast, unsightly scar.

Avoid the Sun

Dr. Smith will do what he can to conceal your scars so that they can usually be hidden under clothing or underwear. For Instance, with an abdominoplasty, he will usually place the incision right above the pubic bone so that you can cover it with your underwear or swimsuit. Make sure that while your scar is still healing that you avoid laying out in the sun or exposing it to the sun at all. If you can, try to wear an extra layer of clothing so that the sun can’t penetrate through it and darken it. Remember that sun exposure will cause your scar to darken and become more noticeable.

Don’t Pick

At one point in the healing process, your scar is going to itch and be bothersome but make sure that you don’t pick at it or touch it; this will just make it worse. If it is itching you a lot, try to put a moisturizer over the top to soothe the skin around it.

Scarring is something that Dr. Smith tries to minimize with incision placement, but it’s ultimately up to you to make sure that you take care of it when you are at home. To learn more about post-operative scarring, schedule a consultation with us at our Brooklyn office. CALL TODAY: (718) 608-1111.
